Govt halts fresh enrollments under PMKVY

Fresh enrolments under the country’s flagship skills training plan have halted in the absence of a plan to switch over from the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana 2.0 that ended on March 31 to its next version.

NEW DELHI: Fresh enrolments under the country’s flagship skills training plan have halted in the absence of a plan to switch over from the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana 2.0 that ended on March 31 to its next version.

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship has extended enrolment under the PMKVY for eight north-eastern states till May 31 due to the Covid-19 outbreak, but no decision has been taken for rest of the country.

An order of the ministry, dated April 1, said the scheme would continue in FY21 till recommendations of the 15th Finance Commission come into effect or till the launch of PMKVY 3.0 (2020-25), whichever was earlier.

But a person privy to the matter told ET that fresh enrolments would not take place and the interim period would be used to complete the training and employment of existing candidates.

The government maintains that there was no issue and adequate measures had been put in place.

“It is our endeavour to ensure that we maintain continuity and quality in skill trainings for our candidates and als ensure our training partners are taken care of and are not impacted by the delay due to the lockdown,”

skills minister Mahendra Nath Pandey told ET.
